What Is Luring?

What is luring?

Luring uses a piece of food to guide your dog into different positions, a bit like a magnet on their nose. Start with small movements, then build up to guiding your puppy through more complicated directions.

How to practise

  1. Hold a treat on your puppy's nose
  2. Get them to follow it in different directions
  3. As they improve, increase the speed slightly
  4. Try moving them in circles or around obstacles

What to look for

Your puppy should follow your hand, not mouth it, bite it, or jump at it.

Marking and rewarding

Once your puppy has followed you for a short time, mark and reward. This teaches them that following the lure earns the reward, a foundation you can build on for teaching all sorts of other behaviours.
