Module 6.17 Emergency Stop

To start teaching your puppy an emergency stop, begin with them close to you and build distance gradually as they improve. Hold a treat in your hand—this will become your stop hand—and raise it up above your head as you say “stop.” As your puppy looks up and pauses or freezes, mark the moment with a “yes,” then deliver the reward by gently tossing the treat just behind them, encouraging a reset. Keep the distance short so they can easily turn back and repeat the exercise, helping them learn to respond quickly and clearly to the stop cue.
